Year:

1684

Meanwhile:

In an attempt to consolidate royal control over the colonies, King James II abolishes the charters of the New England, New York, and New Jersey colonies and creates a single supercolony known as the Dominion of New England. The Dominion dispensed with local assemblies and was administered by a governor-general. The Dominion lasts until 1689 when William of Orange (a Protestant) invades England, taking the title of King William III. Protestant colonists revolt, professing loyalty to the new king, and imprison colonial Dominion representatives. William's kingship immediately results in an expensive war with France (the Nine Years War). Because of his desperation for military funding, William is forced to concede greater powers to Parliament.

Year:

1688

Meanwhile:

Using allegiance to the new Protestant monarchs William of Orange and Queen Mary and complaints about Catholic dominance in the Maryland government and political appointments as a pretext, Protestant leaders John Coode, Kenelm Cheseldyne, and Nehemiah Blackston organized a revolt and gathered an army from St. Mary's and surrounding counties to take over the Maryland government at St. Mary's City. They formed a new government comprised of Protestants only and removed Catholics from all official positions in the colony. Their government was supported from England, and a new governor reporting directly to the crown was sent to Maryland in 1692. The rule of Lord Baltimore was thus ended along with the policy of religious freedom. The disenfranchisement of Catholics and other groups was more permanent this time, lasting until the upheavals of the Revolutionary War.
