Meanwhile:

Fighting back against expanding settlements and slave raids, the Tuscarora (an Algonquin tribe living in North Carolina) began destroying colonial farms and killing settlers. North Carolina appealed to South Carolina, which saw an opportunity for new slaves. In 1713, Capt. James Moore commanded a force made up of principally Cherokee, Yamasee, Creek, and Catawba Indian and attacked the principal Tuscarora town of Nooherooka. Several hundred were killed, and 392 women and children taken back to Charles Town as slaves. The other Tuscarora settlements gave in, and merged with the Iroquois of New York to become the Sixth Iroquois Nation. After several years as trade partners with the Carolina settlers and as allies against Spanish Florida, the Yamasee, Lower Creek, and Catawba were now in debt to the colonists. In April 1715, the tribes struck back killing 400 settlers. Several hundred more settlers fled to Charles Town for protection. The tribes had counted on being able to trade with Virginia for gunpowder, but Virginia sided with Carolina. Carolina also appealed to the defeated Tuscarora, offering them a way to settle a score after their previous defeat. In 1716, out of ammunition and starving, the Catawba made peace with Carolina and agreed to help them against those tribes who were still fighting.

Blackbeard the pirate (Edward Teach) dies in fight with Virginia colonists.

In comparison to English emigrants, Scots-Irish and German immigrants begin to flood into the colonies. Although after 1700 transport to the colonies had become cheaper and easier, better wages in England and an English army offering jobs to young men provided less incentive to emigrate. With legal access to the colonies (since Scotland had merged with Britain in 1707), several waves of Scots began to emigrate, including those from Ulster (who became known as the Scotch-Irish). Drawn mainly from the Rhineland area, German emigrants came to America looking for lower taxes, religious freedom, and more opportunities.
