Meanwhile:

A rise in stock prices for the South Sea Company, which had a monopoly on British trade with Spanish America, created a frenzy of interest in its stocks, driving the price from 100 pounds per share to over 1000 pounds per share. As well, stock prices in other companies, many of them fraudulent, skyrocketed. Prosecution of the frauds, including of bribes to government officials, led to distrust in the market, a panic to sell, and financial chaos for the British economy.
