Baltimore is established in Maryland. At least two other town sites, on which it was hoped permanent towns might be established, had received the same name, but nothing came of either. In 1729 the provincial legislature directed seven commissioners to purchase 60 acres of land on the North side of the Patapsco and lay it out in sixty equal lots as the town of Baltimore.

The Molasses Act, passed by the English Parliament, imposed heavy duties on molasses and sugar imported from non-British islands in the Caribbean (after a similar bill in 1731 to prohibit their importation was defeated in the House of Lords). The intention was to protect the English planters in the Caribbean from French and Dutch competition. In New England, which relied on molasses to distill rum, the act was disregarded by the English colonies and contraband goods were smuggled in from French West Indies.

Methodist preacher George Whitefield arrived in Savannah. The previous year he had received an invitation from John Wesley to come serve in Georgia, but he had also started preaching in England and his electrifying sermons were soon attracting thousands. Just prior to his departure for Georgia, Charles Wesley returned to England and declared, "the whole nation is in an uproar." In all, Whitefield would make seven trips to America and, along with Jonathan Edwards and Gilbert Tennant, serve the Great Awakening during its peak.
