Meanwhile:

The French and Indian War, known in Europe as the Seven Year's War, ends with the Treaty of Paris. Under the treaty, France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for Cuba.

The Proclamation of 1763, signed by King George III of England, prohibits any English settlement west of the Appalachian mountains and requires those already settled in those regions to return east in an attempt to ease tensions with Native Americans. Although not often referenced by the colonists, this was one of the reasons for discontent leading up to the revolution.

Meanwhile:

The Sugar Act is passed by the English Parliament to offset the war debt brought on by the French and Indian War and to help pay for the expenses of running the colonies and newly acquired territories. It was not a new tax but a revision to a customs duty implemented in 1733 to prevent trade with the French West Indies. The colonists until now had simply evaded it through smuggling. The Sugar Act actually reduced the duty by half. The difference was that this time mechanisms were put in place to collect the duty and American shippers faced having actually to pay it.

Meanwhile:

In March, the English Parliament passes the Stamp Act, imposing the first tax designed to specifically raise revenue (to offset the high costs of the British military organization in America.) Previous royal and Parliamentary taxes had been designed to influence trade. All taxes to raise revenue had come from local assemblies and gone into local coffers. Additionally the money would be used to pay the salaries of royal officials in the colonies, making them more independent of the colonial assemblies.

Underground Sons of Liberty are formed in various colonial towns. Its members use violence and intimidation to eventually force all of the British stamp agents to resign and also stop many American merchants from ordering British trade goods. In Boston, Samuel Adams united two rival Bostonian gangs in November 1765, the North End and South End gangs. The Sons of Liberty began training the united gangs as a militia and used them as the Sons of Liberty's "shock troops." The name "Sons of Liberty" was taken from a speech given by Colonel Isaac Barr, a member of the House of Commons in the English Parliament, in February 1765 in opposition to the Prime Minister's (Lord Grenville's) proposed Stamp Act. In his speech, Barr said that Britain's behavior toward Americans "on many occasions has caused the blood of those sons of liberty to recoil within them." The Act was repealed in 1766 after an impassioned speech from William Pitt in Parliament. On the same day the Act was repealed however, a Declaratory Act was passed that again reasserted Parliament's right to legislate "in all cases whatsoever."
