An expanding economy tempted the Bank of Maryland in Baltimore to over extend itself, and by 1834 had issued fifty times as much paper money as it had gold and silver reserves to back it up. The savings of small depositors turned into worthless bank IOU's. Several bank directors who owed large sums to the bank used the opportunity to buy up the IOU's at pennies on the dollar, and then use the worthless paper to repay their loans. In August 1835 an angry mob targeted the bank directors and mayor. The state militia was called out, and at least twelve rioters were killed.
