Ulysses Grant, the Republican candidate, is reelected President defeating Horace Greeley the Liberal Republican candidate. The Democratic party had decided not to field a candidate, giving their support instead to Horace Greeley. Maryland representatives to the Electoral College voted: Thomas A. Hendricks, 8. The MD representatives did not meet until December, while Horace Greeley had died the previous month. A letter of tribute read prior to the voting indicates that Horace Greeley had been the decided favorite in Maryland.

Rutherford B. Hayes is elected president following the disputed election between Democratic Samuel J. Tilden and Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. Republican required all of the 20 disputed electoral votes in order to win the presidency. Since Congress had to approve the decision, the impasse continued until an agreement was reached between the parties which permitted the election of Hayes in exchange for the removal of Federal troops from the South. Within 20 twenty years, gains made by African Americans since the end of the Civil War would be effectively nullified. Maryland representatives to the Electoral College voted: Samuel J. Tilden, 8.
