Resenting the increased influence of Western culture and especially Christian missionaries, a secret Chinese group called the "Boxers" began attacking missionaries outside Peking. When a force of 2100 European soldiers was sent to China to intervene, the Chinese empress used troops to turn them back. As the killing escalated, a second force of 18,000 European soldiers was sent, forcing the empress to flee, and making China pay heavy reparations and make commercial concessions.

Meanwhile:

World War I begins. On June 28, Francis Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and the heir to the Austrian throne, and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia by a pro-Serbian nationalist. Following the assassination, Austria issues an ultimatum to Serbia that it be annexed to Austria. (Austria had already annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1908, provoking a Serbian response and came close to starting a war). Serbia's refusal provokes a declaration of war by Austria. Russia, a Serbian ally, declares war against Austria. Germany joins Austria as an ally, although its real target since 1870 has been France. When Germany invades Belgium on route to France, both France and England (who were guarantors of Belgium neutrality after 1870) declare war on Germany. Turkey, which had no real stake in the conflict, agrees to support Germany and guard Austria's southern border and the Black Sea.
